Mumbai: BMC elections to take place on January 15, counting on January 16

The election schedule for 29 pending municipal corporations in Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Thane, has been officially announced. Voting for these corporations will take place on 15 January, and the results will be declared on 16 January. The model code of conduct has come into effect from today. The announcement was made by the State Election Commission during a press conference. A total of 3.48 crore voters will participate in the elections across the 29 municipal corporations.

These elections had been pending for the past five to seven years (or longer) due to issues regarding OBC reservation. Following directions from the Supreme Court, the path was cleared for elections in local self-governing bodies. Earlier, elections for municipalities and nagarpalikas were held on 2 December, and now the schedule for the remaining 29 municipal corporations has been announced.
