Hum Aapke Hain Koun: When female fans pinched Madhuri Dixit’s cheeks

Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit’s Hum Aapke Hain Koun remains one of the most beloved films in Hindi cinema history. Dixit, who played Nisha in the film, captivated many hearts with her vivacious yet pious persona. From her chirpy attitude to her costumes, everything about the film was classic. On the latest episode of Sit With Hitlist, the actress recalls how Sooraj Barjatya gave a narration of 3.5 hours and how fans recognised her as Nisha everywhere she went.

Madhuri on Sooraj Barjatya’s narration for Hum Aapke Hain Koun

Hum Aapke Hain Koun...! was an adaptation of Rajshri Productions’ own 1982 film Nadiya Ke Paar. While many would consider that the film lacked conflict, it became a rage for its heartwarming narrative. Recalling Sooraj Barjatya’s narration, the Mrs Deshpande actress shares, “He is amazing and such a good narrator. So he was doing every part, playing every person, every character, and all the songs were recorded. I had a narration of around 3.5 hours. And then there was one song which was not recorded, so he sang for us. I was just like, I want to do this movie as it’s heartwarming, positive, all about grace and elegance, tradition, relationships, and the value of our culture is so steeped in that.”

She added, “It’s not about the story; it’s more about interpersonal relationships. When we started shooting, it was like a family of 12 of us.”

Madhuri Dixit recalls fan encounter after film’s release

When asked if she expected such an overwhelming response, the actress stated that no one can predict the reception of any film. Talking about how that film was a turning point, she remembered, “I became like a household member of everybody’s house. Whether it was a daughter, girlfriend, or daughter-in-law, everyone thought of Nisha. I remember I was shooting somewhere in the North, and there were these Punjabi ladies who had come to see me. They looked at me, came and started pinching my cheeks and were like, ‘Kinni soni hai humari Nisha,’ and I was like, oh my God. So for them, I was like a house member.”

For those unversed, the film was released in 1994 and also starred Mohnish Bahl, Salman Khan, Reema Lagoo, Satish Shah, and Renuka Shahane, among others.
