Swara Bhasker on childhood Diwali memories

Hailing from Delhi, Diwali has always been a fun occasion for Swara. From making rangoli to lighting diyas, she enjoys it all. “I have memories of Diwali at home with my family. I grew up in Delhi, so it was one of the main festivals for us. As a child, we were very excited because we always wanted to make rangoli outside the house. And we used to make these terribly—not very sophisticated, neat, or beautiful—but still, we`d feel very pleased about that. Then I have a memory of lighting up diyas in our house after Laxmi Puja. I am not fond of crackers, but I like phooljadi, anar, and chakri.”

She also reminisced about the sweet treats of the festival and indulging in fun competition with her brother. “Diwali was the only time when you got to eat kaju katli without any restrictions when we were children. So our competition was who would open a box of kaju katli and eat it first."

Reflecting on her post-marriage Diwali celebrations, Swara shared that while Fahad was busy with elections one year and she was raising Rabia the next. Now, for the first time, her in-laws and Fahad will celebrate Diwali with her in Delhi. “I`m excited for this Diwali because I think it`s the first time that Pahar`s family is going to be coming to Delhi to celebrate Diwali with me. That`s never happened before. I am getting new clothes stitched for them, and I am elated about spending this time with them,” Swara gushes.

Swara Bhasker on Diwali parties in Bollywood

Talking about how celebration changed after she entered Bollywood, she asserts that Diwali is not about big parties for her. “I used to go for Sonam`s Diwali parties very regularly. That was really my entry into the big glamorous Bollywood parties. But that is very much an external thing. I don`t associate Diwali necessarily with Bollywood parties," she says.

Swara on embracing Fahad`s culture

Talking about how she and Fahad have embraced each other’s cultures, Swara states, “I think that interfaith marriages have happened in India forever. It`s not a new thing. If you love someone, you love them for who they are and what they are, which includes their identity, culture, religion, caste—everything. My experience has been very positive. I know that there’s stereotyping about Muslims as being conservative and traditional, but Fahad’s family has accepted me for who I am, and it`s been lovely.”

She adds, “The nicest thing is that I get to celebrate everything. I don`t keep a single roza, but I eat iftar with them every day. I get to celebrate their festivals, and they get to celebrate mine.”
