Mumbai Weather Update: City Witnesses Rise In Temperature, AQI Continues To Deteoriate

Mumbai has witnessed a gradual increase in the temperatures after a brief cold spell and respite from the sweltering heat.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) data showed that the daytime maximum temperatures at Santacruz and Colaba observatory were recorded at 33.8 and 32.8 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, December 17.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, December 18, the Santacruz observatory recorded the minimum temperature at 17.4 degrees Celsius and Colaba observatory reported 22 degrees, which is above normal.

The minimum temperatures also hovered above normal as the Colaba station logged 22 degrees between Tuesday and Wednesday night, which is above normal, while the Santacruz station recorded 18.4 degrees. The above normal temperatures came days after the city experienced its coldest night of the season on December 12 when minimum temperatures fell below 15 degrees.

Furthermore, the weather department predicted that a dip in temperatures is likely to elude the city for a week ahead with the day time temperatures likely to oscillate between 33 and 34 degrees.

As per records, the city’s warmest December day was recorded in 1987 at 39.8 degrees while its coldest day was logged in 1949 at 10.6 degrees.

AQI in Mumbai:

The air quality in Mumbai continues to deteriorate and witnesses poor AQI, despite the spike in temperatures.

Records from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) showed that while the city’s overall air quality remained at 113 until Tuesday morning, December 16, whereas the AQI spiked to 137 on Wednesday afternoon, December 17.

Of the 20 stations which were active, the worst AQI was logged at 239 in Chembur, followed by a high AQI of 196 in Ghatkopar, 169 in BKC and 167 in Malad West. Worli, at 168, Ghatkopar at 148, and Navy Nagar, Colaba, at 141. Remaining in the ‘Moderate’ range were Borivali East at 107, Mazgaon at 108, Kurla at 116, Bhandup West at 116 and Worli at 107 while Mulund West recorded a ‘Satisfactory’ AQI of 62. 

However, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) maintained that the city’s air quality had improved significantly during the month, as against last year, which saw the AQI between 167-158 in December 1-16.

In a statement issued by the civic body, officials said that between December 1 and December 16, BMC issued 353 show cause notices at construction sites while 121 stop work notices were issued.

Besides this, deep cleaning with ester tanker was done across 376 places, while spraying with misting machines was carried out at 253 places.
