Mumbai: BEST’s Last JNNURM Bus to Retire on October 25, Marking End of an Era
Ashok Leyland Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) bus number 1942 from the Gorai depot recently bid farewell to Mumbaikars. Now, BEST bus number 1864 will also retire on October 25, with a ceremonial farewell planned for the occasion.
Under the BEST initiative, buses that have completed their 15-year lifespan are being scrapped. Bus number 1864, the last remaining JNNURM bus, will mark the end of the Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission era. Earlier, bus number 1948 from Gorai depot was retired on October 13, and bus number 1949 on October 17. With these retirements, the number of privately owned buses in the BEST fleet will decrease, which may cause inconvenience to passengers in the future.
Bus number 1864 from the Malvani depot has completed 15 years and will permanently stop operations from October 25. Its final run is scheduled on route number 2070. The discontinuation of this service may also lead to the permanent suspension of some privately operated routes in Bhandup.
