WR Takes Strict Action Against AI-Generated Fake Tickets; Legal Proceedings Initiated

Western Railway has launched a major crackdown on passengers using fake tickets generated through artificial intelligence (AI), following a rise in such fraudulent cases on Mumbai’s suburban railway network. Railway officials have warned that strict legal action will be taken against those found travelling with forged or manipulated tickets.

The issue came to light during routine ticket inspections on the Churchgate–Virar suburban section, where ticket-checking staff detected a fake UTS mobile ticket. Upon verification through official systems, it was confirmed that the ticket had not been generated through authorised railway platforms and was instead digitally fabricated.

Following the incident, the Bandra Railway Police registered a case of ticket fraud against the passenger involved, along with another individual who allegedly helped in creating the fake ticket. Railway authorities stated that similar cases of AI-generated or digitally altered tickets have been detected on other routes as well, raising serious concerns about misuse of technology.

The Acting General Manager of Western Railway, Pradeep Kumar, stated that ticket-checking staff will be given additional training to identify fake and manipulated digital tickets more effectively. He emphasized that passengers must ensure they purchase tickets only through authorized apps such as UTS or official ticket counters.

As part of its efforts to promote responsible travel, Western Railway has also been running an awareness campaign titled “My Ticket, My Pride – My Contribution to a Developed India”, aimed at educating commuters about the importance of travelling with valid tickets and following railway rules.

In addition, Western Railway plans to upgrade passenger facilities by installing around 325 new advanced Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) across its network. These new machines will replace outdated or non-functional units, making ticket purchase easier and reducing dependency on unauthorized methods. At present, over 500 ATVMs are operational on the Western Railway suburban network.

Railway authorities have strongly appealed to passengers to avoid using fake or forged tickets, warning that those caught will face penalties, fines, and criminal action under relevant laws. Officials reiterated that revenue generated from legitimate ticket sales plays a vital role in improving infrastructure, safety systems, and passenger amenities.
