Son of Sardaar 2 vs Dhadak 2: Ajay Devgn`s sequel takes the lead

Friday, August 1, 2025, saw a huge box office clash with two Hindi films, Son of Sardaar 2 and Dhadak 2, hitting the theatres. It was Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri starrer social drama Dhadak 2 and Ajay Devgn and Mrunal Thakur`s comedy flick Son of Sardaar 2 locking horns with each other. At the end of day one, Ajay`s film marched ahead. On the other hand, Siddhant-Triptii starrer witnessed a slow opening at the box office on its first day.

By the end of day 1, Dhadak 2 earned just Rs 3.35 crore nett, as per reports. The sequel failed to surpass the first-day collection of its predecessor, 2018`s Dhadak, starring Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter, which opened at Rs 8.7 crore.

Dhadak 2 witnessed an overall 22.85% Hindi occupancy on Friday, as the night shows recorded the maximum occupancy of 32.07%. On the other hand, the morning shows saw 15.02% occupancy. Afternoon witnessed a footfall of 22.29% and 22.03% respectively.

Dhadak 2 is a remake of the Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal, and revolves around Nilesh (Siddhant Chaturvedi), a law student from an oppressed caste, who falls in love with Vidhi (Triptii Dimri), an upper-caste girl. The film explores how their love story unfolds in the middle of caste politics, injustice and painful truths.

Meanwhile, Ajay Devgn`s film had a decent opening, earning an estimated Rs 6.75 crore nett on the first day of its release. The film saw an overall 22.56% Hindi occupancy on Friday, with the morning and the afternoon shows having occupancy rates of 10.24% and 17.88% respectively. The evening and night shows saw better numbers with 21.84% and 40.27%.

Directed by Vijay Kumar Arora, Son of Sardaar 2 brings back Ajay Devgn as Jassi. It features a storyline filled with mistaken identities, family feuds, and chaotic wedding shenanigans, while being joined by Mrunal Thakur and Ravi Kishan, whose performance has been widely appreciated in the sequel. The makers of the film have tried to recreate the charm of the original 2012 Son of Sardaar, but the reactions of the audience have been mixed.

Meanwhile, both films are facing tough competition with the previous releases, namely, Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda`s starrer Saiyaara and the animated film Mahavtar Narsimha at the box office.
