Mumbai's AQI Reaches Concerning Levels Amid Diwali; 9 Locations See Poor, Very Poor Category

The air quality index (AQI) in Mumbai was recorded at 176 on Monday morning, October 20, marking a spike from the 149 recorded Sunday, October 19, amid ongoing Diwali festivity.
The highest AQI was recorded in Colaba (266), closely followed by Bandra East at 232. The air quality in Mumbai is expected to take a steep dip in the coming months as winter nears and wind patterns slow down.
The Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) recorded the worst AQI at 334, followed by Colaba (Navy Nagar) at 274 and Deonar at 268. Other areas with poor air quality include Vile Parle (264), Andheri East (257), Mazgaon (240), Malad at 214, and Worli at 201.
Mumbaikars woke up to sunny skies and hot, humid conditions on Monday. Both the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Colaba and Santacruz observatories recorded dry and humid weather.
According to the latest Mumbai weather updates from IMD, Colaba recorded a maximum temperature of 35 degrees Celsius, 1.5 degrees Celsius above normal, while the minimum temperature stood at 26.5 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity was measured at 92 per cent.
In Santacruz, the mercury rose slightly higher, with a maximum temperature of 35.8 degrees Celsius, 1.8 degrees Celsius above normal, and a minimum of 25.1 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels were recorded at 71 per cent.
Meanwhile, Thane and Navi Mumbai are experiencing similar conditions, with intermittent cloud cover giving way to renewed intense heat. Residents are advised to prioritise their health amidst the escalating temperatures.
