Ganesh Idol Immersion in Thane: Over 8,984 Idols Immersed on Fifth Day

On the fifth day of Ganesh Chaturthi, 8,984 Ganesh idols were immersed across the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) area in a peaceful and devotional atmosphere. Of these, 4,811 idols were made of eco-friendly clay (Shadu mati) and 4,173 were made of POP (Plaster of Paris).

To promote an environment-friendly Ganesh festival, TMC had set up 24 artificial ponds, which received a very good response from devotees again this year. These artificial ponds are part of the civic body's alternative immersion arrangements to reduce water pollution.

Additionally, 25 idols were received at the designated idol acceptance centres, and 62 idols were immersed through mobile immersion units.

As per Bombay High Court guidelines, idols up to 6 feet tall must be immersed in artificial ponds, while larger ones can be immersed at natural creek ghats. However, some devotees still insisted on immersing even smaller idols in the creek. Authorities repeatedly urged them to use artificial ponds instead. The civic body has once again appealed to the public to immerse idols under 6 feet in artificial ponds on the 7th and 11th days as well.

After the immersion, clay residues collected from the ponds will be processed as per the Pollution Control Board’s action plan, informed Chief Environment Officer Manisha Pradhan.

Over 6 Tons of Nirmalya (Floral Waste) Collected

More than 6 tons of nirmalya (floral offerings) were collected during the fifth day’s immersions. This will be processed using bio-composting at TMC's waste management plants in Kolshet, Kausa, and Ritu Park, to produce organic manure. Non-degradable items will be sorted and sent for recycling.

Immersion Statistics (Fifth Day – 2025 vs 2024):

Immersion Spot Type Idols Immersed (2025) Last Year (2024)
