Dhanush breaks silence on AI-version of Raanjhanaa: `Not the film I committed to

Actor Dhanush has commented on the AI- version of Raanjhanaa that has been released in theatres. The AI-altered climax sees his character Kundan come back to life. While director Aanand L Rai has been strongly opposing this move by producers Eros International, this is the first time that Dhanush has publicly reacted to the matter. Two days after the AI version of the film was released in Tamil Nadu, Dhanush issued a statement.

The Tamil superstar Dhanush said that the AI version has deeply disturbed him. "The re-release of Raanjhanaa with an Al-altered climax has completely disturbed me. This alternate ending has stripped the film of its very soul, and the concerned parties went ahead with it despite my clear objection."

He added, "This is not the film I committed to 12 years ago. The use of Al to alter films or content is a deeply concerning precedent for both art and artists.
It threatens the integrity of storytelling and the legacy of cinema. I sincerely hope that stricter regulations are put in place to prevent such practices in the future.

Audience reacts to AI- version of Raanjhanaa

The altered version of Raanjhanaa has currently been released in select theatres of Tamil Nadu alone, where Dhanush has a huge fan base. While there has been resistance against the AI version of the film led by director Aanand L Rai, fans turned up in theatres to watch the re-release. 

Visuals of people enjoying Raanjhanaa re-release have now surfaced on social media. In the videos, fans can be seen erupting in joy as Kundan comes back to life in the climax of Raanjhanaa. 

Some other visuals of people cheering and hooting, other scenes of the film has also surfaced. 

Aanand L Rai opposes Raanjhanaa re-release

On Thursday, Rai took to his Instagram feed and shared a still from the much-loved film starring Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor. Along with the image, he wrote, "The past three weeks have been surreal, and deeply upsetting."

Sharing his feelings about watching the film`s climax being altered, he wrote, "To watch Raanjhanaa, a film born out of care, conflict, collaboration, and creative risk, be altered, repackaged, and re-released without my knowledge or consent has been nothing short of devastating. What makes it worse is the complete ease and casualness with which it’s been done. And yet, in the middle of all this, the support and solidarity from the industry, our audiences, and the larger creative community has reminded me of what Raanjhanaa stood for in the first place - connection, courage, and truth.  I’m deeply grateful for that."

The filmmaker made it clear that he has no role in the new version of the film. "Let me say this as clearly as I can: I do not support or endorse the AI-altered version of Raanjhanaa. It is unauthorised. I had no role in it. Neither did the team that made the film. And whatever it claims to be, it is not the film we intended, or made."
