Newly-Built Mira-Bhayandar Flyover Design Showing 4-Lane Abruptly Turning Into 2-Lane Triggers Online Debate
A recently built flyover in the Mira-Bhayandar area has drawn attention on social media after a video of its design went viral. The flyover was constructed to reduce traffic congestion. However, its unusual structure has led to questions about planning and execution.
A post on X by the handle “Gems of Mira Bhayandar” (@GemsOfMBMC) shared the video and questioned the design of the project. The video shows the flyover connecting Bhayandar and Mira Road. At the starting point, the flyover has four lanes. As vehicles move ahead, the road suddenly narrows. By the middle of the flyover, it reduces to two lanes at the other end. This change in width is clearly visible in the footage shared online.
A 4-lane flyover in Mira-Bhayandar suddenly narrows into just 2 lanes. This double-decker flyover is a part of the Metro Line 9 project by JKumar and is set to be inaugurated in February.
Is this how @MMRDAOfficial designs “infrastructure”?
How did this design get approved? ?? pic.twitter.com/ZNfwi1Yf9W— Gems of Mira Bhayandar (@GemsOfMBMC) January 26, 2026
On Tuesday, January 27, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) responded to the video. The post stated that the double-decker flyover, part of JKumar’s Metro Line 9 project, is expected to open in February. It also questioned how such a design was approved.
The authority said the flyover does not narrow suddenly. It stated that the shift from four lanes to two lanes is due to road width limitations and future network planning. According to MMRDA, this is not a design flaw.
The authority explained that the flyover currently has two lanes meant for Bhayandar East. The remaining two lanes are planned for a future connection to Bhayandar West. These lanes will be developed as part of an extension across the Western Railway line.
MMRDA further clarified that along the current alignment, the Bhayandar East arm comes first. This is why only two lanes are in use at present. The outer two lanes are reserved for the future expansion toward Bhayandar West.
Flyovers are generally built to allow smooth and fast traffic movement. In this case, the narrowing of lanes has created a bottleneck. Vehicles moving at speed from the four-lane section are forced to merge into a smaller two-lane stretch. This has led to concerns about traffic jams and road safety risks.
The design has also become a subject of satire online. Social media users and local residents have shared critical comments. Some posts mock the structure and question the engineering approach.
There is also speculation about possible reasons behind the design. Some believe land availability issues and ongoing Metro construction may have influenced the layout. There are concerns that traffic problems may increase until the planned widening and future connections are completed.
