Mumbai: State Approves On-Site Rehabilitation for Residents Affected by Elphinstone Bridge Demolition

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has approved a proposal to rehabilitate residents of two affected buildings in the Elphinstone Bridge area on the Shivadi-Worli elevated road in MHADA flats available in the same area.

Rehabilitation in the same area

A total of 83 project victims of the affected buildings of Laxmi Niwas and Haji Noorani Chawl will now be rehabilitated in the same area. Deputy Chief Minister Shinde has approved the proposal, which will provide relief to the residents of the affected buildings.

83 Project-Affected People to Be Rehabilitated

As part of the construction of the Worli-Sewri Connector, the Elphinstone Bridge is to be demolished. During the construction of pillars for the connector, two buildings — Laxmi Nivas and Haji Noorani Chawl — will be impacted. The residents had demanded rehabilitation in nearby MHADA flats. Acting on this, the Deputy CM approved the proposal to relocate them within the same locality.

  • 60 affected residents from Laxmi Nivas

  • 23 affected residents from Haji Noorani Chawl
All will now be shifted to MHADA flats in the same area.

Project to Be Completed Within Deadline

Originally, 19 buildings were expected to be affected by the project. However, MMRDA made structural adjustments to the alignment, sparing 17 of them. This move not only simplified the rehabilitation process but also saved an estimated INR 5,200 crore in rehabilitation costs. The decision will help speed up the project and ensure it is completed within the set timeline.
