CR's Mumbai division realises nearly ₹30 crores as penalty from 7 lakh ticketless travellers

Central Railway, in its unwavering commitment to provide a safe, smooth and comfortable travel experience to its valued passengers, has stepped up its efforts to curb unauthorised and ticketless travel across its network. Through intensified and systematic ticket checking drives, the Railway has achieved significant results during the financial year 2025-26 (April to August 2025).

During this period, Central Railway's dedicated ticket checking teams apprehended 17.19 lakh passengers travelling without ticket, with improper or invalid travel authority, and realised a record penalty amount of ₹100.50 crores.

During the month of August 2025, Central Railway ticket checking teams have apprehended 2.76 lakh passengers travelling without ticket / valid ticket as against 2.34 lakh passengers in August- 2024 indicating an increase of 18% 

A sum of Rs.13.78 crores have been realised as penalty from the offenders in the month of August-2025 as against Rs.8.85 crores in August- 2024, indicating an increase of more than 55%.

Division wise details for the FY-2025-26( April to August--2025) of passengers caught travelling without ticket / valid ticket and penalty amount realised from them are as follows:

•Bhusaval division Rs.36.93 crores from 4.34 lakh cases,

Mumbai division Rs.29.17 crores from 7.03 lakh cases,

•Nagpur division Rs.11.44 crores from 1.85 lakh cases

•Pune division Rs.10.41 crores from 1.89 lakh cases

•Solapur division Rs.5.01 crores from 1.04 lakh cases and

•Headquarters Rs.7.54 crores from 1.04 lakh cases

Central Railway adopts a multi-pronged strategy to detect unauthorised travel which includes station checks, ambush checks, fortress checks, intensive checks, and mega ticket checking drives. These operations are conducted across Mail/Express trains, Passenger trains, Special trains, as well as Suburban trains in Mumbai and Pune divisions.

In a major step to curb ticketing frauds and save revenue loss Central Railway has suspended booking of tickets by Static QR code through UTS mobile app after reports of wide spread misuse by passengers.

Discontinuation of the QR code system has now put a check o­n misuse of paperless ticketing. 

Central Railway appeals to passengers to travel with dignity and responsibility by purchasing proper and valid tickets to avoid inconvenience and penalties. The Railway reiterates its zero-tolerance policy towards ticketless travel and remains committed to ensuring that passengers enjoy a comfortable and dignified journey.
