BMC to begin road concretisation across Mumbai from October 1

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to resume works on its ambitious mega concretisation project from October 1. It was temporarily suspended during the four-month monsoon season.

As per civic officials, the work on the partially completed roads — spanning 574 roads or 156.74 km — will be taken up immediately.

In addition to these, 776 new roads, covering approximately 208.70 km, will also be taken up for concretisation in the upcoming phase.

A senior civic official said, "Work on 574 roads will begin immediately as the monsoon ends. The work will start by October 1 and will be completed by May 2026. At the same time, work will also begin on 776 other roads that have not yet been taken up. Some of these will be completed by May 2027."

So far, work on 771 roads, covering an approximate length of 186 km, has been completed under the first and second phases of the project.

Meanwhile, 208.70 km of roads are yet to be taken up for concretisation.

About 64% of the work in the first phase has been completed, while 37% of the work in the second phase has been completed. Overall, 49% of the work of the project has been completed.

The BMC's road concreting project, which began in 2023, aims to create more durable roads and reduce potholes.

The first phase includes 700 roads with a length of approximately 324 km, while the second phase includes 1421 roads with a length of about 377 km.

As per the original schedule, the BMC planned to complete the first phase by December 2025 and the second phase by December 2026. “We have calculated the time taken to complete all the planned roads by dividing them into small segments of 30 to 40 metres in length per kilometre,” a senior civic official said.

Meanwhile, nearly 25 roads which had previously been earmarked for concretisation have also been deleted from the civic plans where they have received requests from citizens and found them valid, or in areas where the width of the road was too narrow.

Moreover, to maintain transparency, the BMC has launched its ‘Concretisation of Roads’ public dashboard which enables citizens to track the live status. Zone-wise, ward-wise and road-wise data is available, showing the percentage of work completed on each road.
