Air quality in Mulund deteriorates due to metro work, MLA Mihir Kotecha complains
The air quality index in Mulund has reached 286. BJP MLA Mihir Kotecha has claimed that pollution levels have risen due to ongoing Metro 4 work. He stated that MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee has assured him that the area will be cleaned within eight days and action will be taken against the contractor.
Kotecha inspected the Metro work along a two-kilometre stretch of the LBS Road on Sunday with MMRDA officials. During the inspection, it was found that construction waste and debris had been dumped at around 100 locations in violation of regulations. The stretch has effectively turned into a dumping ground, with garbage lying there for months and sidewalks damaged. Kotecha pointed out that these Metro 4 activities are a major reason for the worsening air quality.
Citywide Air Quality Concerns
Air pollution has deteriorated in several parts of Mumbai. Large-scale infrastructure projects, including metro construction, along with private building works, have contributed to rising dust, cement particles, and other pollutants. The air appears smoky in the mornings and evenings due to these combined factors.
The Bombay High Court has also taken serious note of the situation and directed all agencies, including the Municipal Corporation, to implement measures to reduce pollution and improve air quality.
