3.6 Million E-Challans Issued on Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Only 15% Fines Recovered
The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has issued 3.6 million e-challans to drivers on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway since July 2024. These challans were issued for violations such as speeding, unsafe overtaking, and lane cutting.
The total amount of unpaid fines is estimated to be around INR 600 crore. However, only 15% of the fines have been paid. This means INR 90 crore has been recovered from traffic violators, and around 530,000 e-challans have been settled.
As per reports, the remaining offenders are being pursued, and reminders are being sent regularly. Authorities continue to track violators using the ITMS system to recover pending fines and improve road safety along the Mumbai-Pune Motorway.
The Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) was implemented about eighteen months ago by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The system automatically detects traffic violations. Overspeeding penalties are applied immediately. Other infractions are checked before the challans are processed.
The Transport Department’s Road Safety Fund contributed INR 45 crore to the INR 100 crore cost of implementing ITMS. MSRDC has installed forty gantries with CCTV cameras along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
The system also includes weigh-in-motion sensors, weather monitoring, dynamic message boards, speed detection cameras, automatic number plate recognition, and a Command and Control Centre to monitor traffic enforcement.
