Maratha Reservation Protest: BMC deploys over 1,000 workers, cleaning equipment to maintain hygiene in city

Amid ongoing protest over Maratha quota, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) deployed additional sanitation workers, cleaning equipment and civic amenities.

This is a part of a large-scale cleaning operation launched at and around Azad Maidan in south Mumbai along with its surrounding areas to maintain hygiene.

As of Monday, September 1, over 400 sanitation workers worked through the night, while more than 1,000 staff continued the clean-up during the morning session on the protest site and nearby areas to maintain cleanliness. In addition to this, arrangements of 450 toilets, both mobile and fixed, have also been made.

According to reports, since Friday, August 29, over 1,000 sanitation workers were on field to clear over 70 metric tonnes of garbage.

In a bid to prevent littering, the BMC has also provided 1,500 dustbin bags to the protestors, appealing them to use the bags for disposing filth.

The civic body has deployed the use of jetting and suction plants for cleaning.

Furthermore, officials added that at least six teams have been dedicated for constant fumigation on the protest site to prevent the spread of pests and mosquitoes.

At least 25 water tankers have also been provided by the civic body for the protestors’ usage.

On Monday, delegation of Maratha protesters also convened a meeting with Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.

Following the meeting, the BMC has constituted a war room comprising six civic officials to monitor the situation on ground.
