130 acres of reclaimed land beside the Coastal Road to be beautified by RIL

At the Annual General Meeting of Reliance Industries Ltd, a transformative vision for Mumbai was presented, focusing on environmental rejuvenation and healthcare innovation. Nita Ambani’s address drew attention to the future of 130 acres of reclaimed land extending from Priyadarshini Park to Worli, where expansive gardens are to be developed along the Coastal Road.

The initiative was described as a “green lung for generations to come,” where citizens will be able to access tree-lined walkways, cycling tracks, and open plazas surrounded by flowers. The announcement was welcomed as a reassurance by more than 70,000 people who had supported a petition calling for a coastal forest in the area. It was noted that the project was introduced with a personal sentiment, as Ambani was quoted saying that a “ribbon of green” would embrace Mumbai’s shoreline and offer a space for fresh air, sunsets, and leisure.

The civic body’s decision to entrust this project to Reliance Industries was explained as a pragmatic choice. It was stated that RIL was the only company prepared to take up the entire stretch, with expertise in large-scale developments cited as a reason for the handover. In addition, the arrangement was considered cost-effective, as it was expected to save approximately ₹400 crore in expenses beyond the ₹13,000 crore already invested in the Coastal Road project. The agreement requires Reliance to maintain the gardens and the 7.5 km promenade for 30 years, with an option to extend for an equal period.

Statements suggested that the Coastal Road Gardens are intended to become a symbol of harmony between development and environmental care. They are to be nurtured as a long-term gift for the city, with the responsibility for upkeep being borne by Reliance. According to a senior official from the BMC’s Coastal Road department, discussions on the finer aspects of the agreement are still underway, after which the design process is expected to begin in full scale.

Alongside the environmental project, an ambitious healthcare plan was also highlighted. Reliance Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the company, is in the process of creating a state-of-the-art medical city in Mumbai. The upcoming facility is designed to accommodate 2,000 beds and will feature AI-powered diagnostics, advanced medical technologies, and collaborations with some of the world’s leading doctors. It was conveyed that the project aims to establish new global benchmarks for healthcare delivery.

Through these twin initiatives—one focused on green infrastructure and the other on healthcare excellence—Mumbai’s future is being reimagined. The projects were portrayed as legacies of balance, progress, and care, promising benefits that will endure for generations.
