War on Rats: 92,000 Rats Eliminated This Year in Navi Mumbai

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has killed around 92,000 rats this year. By the end of this month, the number is expected to reach 1,00,000. Additionally, over 500 rats and mice have been captured in cages, as per reports. The goal is to prevent diseases like leptospirosis and plague. These diseases are often spread by rodents, especially during the monsoon season. To tackle the issue, poison tablets are placed where rats are found in large numbers. Spraying techniques and cages are also used in certain areas. Due to the growing rat population in the city, NMMC had set up a special rodent control department. Over the past 10 years, the department has killed almost 1.6 million rats in various drives.Reports suggest that food and other rubbish are often dumped in nullahs and drains. This is common in hawker areas and poorer neighborhoods. This becomes easy access to food for rats, so their numbers are growing quickly. It should be noted that rats and mice multiply quickly. Mice can give birth to four to 15 offspring at a time. After five weeks, these offspring can breed. Due to their short gestation period and 18-month lifespan, a single pair of rats can produce 15,000 rats in a year.
