62-year-old Mumbai woman weighing 123 kg undergoes advanced robotic knee replacement surgery
A Mumbai-based woman weighing 123 kg, who had been suffering from severe knee pain due to advanced osteoarthritis of both knees for the past seven years, successfully underwent knee replacement surgery recently at Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital in Powai, Mumbai. The 62-year-old patient, Kashmira Merchant, was operated on by Dr. Sanjeev Jain - a full-time Orthopaedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon, with the assistance of robotic technology.Obese patients with osteoarthritis often experience heightened knee pain, which further limits their mobility. Despite these challenges, Dr. Sanjeev Jain's expertise ensured a successful joint replacement surgery.Commenting on the procedure, Dr. Sanjeev Jain said, "Kashmira Merchant had been enduring pain for the past 7 to 8 years and consulted multiple doctors. She approached our hospital a year and a half ago, and it took us one year to convince her to proceed with the surgery. The case was challenging due to her obesity. With the assistance of our recently deployed robotic system, we successfully performed the surgery on both knees simultaneously.. She was discharged after a four-day hospital stay for monitoring and is now self-reliant and able to carry out her daily routine activities independently."Dr. Sanjeev Jain further elaborated on the integration of robotic systems with human expertise for knee replacement surgeries, emphasizing the significant advancements and precision that robotics bring to the field. "The perfect blend of robotic technology and human expertise allows us to achieve exceptional outcomes in knee replacement surgeries. The robotic system enhances precision and alignment, which are crucial for the long-term success of the surgery," he added. Robotic assisted surgery also helps in less invasion of tissues, hence reduced or no pain, which in terms lead to faster recovery.
